Furniture photography with a little help from AI
At Vizz Creative, we recently had the pleasure of working on a comprehensive product photography project for Sofa-Direct, an online sofa retailer based in Ireland. This exciting project involved photographing over 100 sofas, including their three-seater, two-seater, and armchair combinations, the final result was over 400 images.
Below is a glimpse into the creative process and challenges behind the shoot, as well as how we combined traditional photography with cutting-edge AI to deliver great results for the client.

The Challenge: Showcasing Sofas Beyond the Showroom
While the showroom provided a beautifully decorated space for our shoot, capturing the sofas in real-life home settings was essential for the online store. Since it wasn’t practical to stage a variety of home interiors within the showroom, we opted for a creative solution: photographing the sofas against a white background and using AI to craft virtual environments.
Each sofa was meticulously photographed from multiple angles, including front, side, and close-ups of unique features such as recliners, USB ports, and material details. These images were then isolated on a pure white background for product listings. To bring the sofas to life in relatable settings, we leveraged AI to place them in realistic, tailored room environments.

Creating Home Settings with AI
After capturing and isolating the sofa images, we began the process of generating AI-powered home interiors designed to match the style and appeal of each piece. This approach required a delicate balance of creativity and technical precision:
Designing Modern, Clean Spaces: We crafted stylish, contemporary interiors to highlight and enhance the sofas’ designs.
Aligning Perspectives Seamlessly: Ensuring the AI-generated rooms perfectly matched the angles of the photographed sofas was crucial for creating a natural and cohesive look.
Through this innovative approach, we transformed the sofas from showroom pieces into aspirational centrepieces for any home.

Overcoming AI’s Limitations
While AI proved invaluable in creating realistic room settings, it struggled with details like rugs and coffee tables. To address this, we had photographed additional props during the shoot, including simple rugs and coffee tables, which we later incorporated into the final images. This blend of real photography and AI-generated design allowed us to overcome the limitations and create polished, high-quality visuals.

Going the Extra Mile
With some of the sofa sets, not all the colours were available to photograph. The client provided us with swatches for these sofas, and using our Photoshop expertise, we were able to create visuals showcasing all the colours in each range, ensuring a complete portfolio for their catalog.

Capturing Features with Video
In addition to product photography, we captured short videos highlighting the sofas' features, such as recliners, built-in USB connections, and other functional elements. These videos provided Sofa-Direct with dynamic content to showcase their products more interactively online.

A Team Effort
The project was a four-day intensive shoot, and the success was made possible by the incredible team we worked with. From manoeuvring heavy sofas into position to ensuring every detail was perfect, the team’s hard work and dedication were truly commendable.
